If you are interested in seeing the statistics of bipolar disorder diagnosis in the United States over the past several years, you may want to take a peek into the Archives of General Psychiatry. We should have records after all that make research easy so that new facts can be dug up about such conditions when they are needed.

In the attempt to diagnose bipolar disorder, your psychiatrist will ask you series of searching questions, some of which you may not consider to be relevant. This is why it is critical that you are working with a psychiatrist who you trust, because when they ask these questions, you have to be able to answer them still without fear or doubt.

Note that the diagnosis is not something you want to do or get over the Internet. Sure there are websites that make it easy enough all over the internet at this time, but they lack the personal touch of direct contact between doctor and patient that is required for accuracy of diagnosis and best effects. Try to get your diagnosis in person.

The proportion of children in America that were diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 1990 was less than 3 percent. I wouldn’t want to cause you much alarm by revealing the current proportion as at this time, but I can tell you simply that it has grown more than fivefold. Cause for alarm? I wouldn’t know; but I would wait for the pros to tell us. It’s always a very good step to take all the precautions you can against this disease. In other words, don’t take things for granted but seek the right medical help all the time.

Using Electroconvulsive Therapy To Treat Bipolar Disorder %u2013 What …

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), also known as electroshock therapy, is a controversial medical treatment that induces a seizure by passing electricity through the patient’s brain. ECT was a common psychiatric treatment until the late 20th century, when it fell into disuse as better drug therapies became readily available for more psychiatric conditions. It is now reserved for severe cases of depression in such illnesses as major depression and the depression associated with bipolar disorder. It can also be used to treat a manic episode.

It is believed that ECT works by using an electrical shock to cause a seizure (a short period of irregular brain activity). ECT may be given during an inpatient stay, or just for outpatient quick treatment. ECT is given up to three times a week. Usually no more than twelve treatments are needed. Treatment is given by a psychiatrist. This seizure releases many chemicals in the brain. These chemicals, called neurotransmitters, deliver messages from one brain cell to another. The release of these chemicals makes the brain cells work better. A person’s mood will improve when his or her brain cells and chemical messengers work better.

In electroconvulsive therapy, an electric current is sent through the scalp to the brain. ECT is one of the fastest ways to relieve symptoms in people who suffer from mania or severe depression. ECT is generally used as a last resort when the illness does not respond to medication or therapy. It can be used when a patient cannot take medication, such as during pregnancy. It is also used when patients pose a severe threat to themselves or others and it is dangerous to wait until medication takes effect.

Prior to an ECT treatment, the patient is given a muscle relaxant and put under general anesthesia. ECT, when done correctly, will cause the patient to have a seizure, and the muscle relaxant is given to limit the size of the episode. Electrodes are placed on the patients scalp and a finely controlled electric current is applied that causes a brief seizure in the brain. Because the muscles are relaxed, the seizure will usually be limited to slight movement of the hands and feet. Patients are carefully monitored during the treatment. The patient awakens minutes later and does not remember the treatment or events surrounding the treatment.

Side effects may result from the anesthesia, the ECT treatment or both. Temporary short-term memory loss can be one of the side effects; this memory loss usually goes away one to two weeks after treatment. Some people may have longer-lasting problems with memory after ECT. General side effects like confusion, nausea, headache, and jaw pain are also common. These side effects may last up to several days after the procedure. In extremely rare cases, ECT can cause heart attack, stroke, or death. People with certain heart problems usually are not good candidates for ECT.

While the majority of psychiatrists believe that properly administered ECT is a safe and effective treatment for some conditions, a vocal minority of psychiatrists, former patients, antipsychiatry activists, and others strongly criticize the procedure as extremely harmful to patients’ subsequent mental state. In the early days of use, ECT was administered without anaesthesia or muscle relaxants. Patients were frequently injured as a side effect of the induced seizure.

ECT has been commonly misused in the past, sometimes as a punishment for patients hospitalized in mental institutions. ECT was sometimes abused by unethical mental health professionals as a means of punishing and controlling unruly or uncooperative patients. Many people came to view ECT unfavorably after negative depictions of it in several books and films. The use of ECT is still a controversial.

Most doctors will only attempt to treat you for manic-depressive illness when they know what triggers set your episodes off. Since these triggers differ one from the other in different patients, it is often a meticulous process to find them out because you are yourself likely unaware of them. You are going to have to be patient.

The mood swings that you experience when you suffer from bipolar affective disorder do not just come out of the blues, contrary to what you may think. These feelings come from certain triggers that are in the environment around you, or actually in your mind. You are going to have to identify them; otherwise the disease will win each time, every time.

Certain words in a conversation may trigger an episode of depression in a bipolar disorder patient. They may not even be aware of what is happening, but you who are having a talk with them ought to notice the differences. You are going to have to find ways to help them when that happens, or you will both pay for it. Take note of this for it is very important.

The frequency with which a bipolar disorder patient comes across a trigger for the different phases of the disease often determines how badly they suffer from the condition. If the triggers are constant in their minds or their environment, they may have trouble ever living a normal life at all. That puts the onus on you, their friend, to do what you must to help them.

The cause of bipolar disorder, like so many other kinds of ailments has not been detected but some risk factors have been identified with this condition. One of the major risk factors often associated with this condition is genetics.

Sure your suffering from bipolar-disorder is related to your genes, but it is a fact that high stress levels tend to trigger or aggravate periods of mania or depression in a patient, and you know you don’t need that.

The extreme low depression in bipolar disorder can be triggered by any number of factors in your immediate or extended environment. The same factors can cause the extreme highs of the condition also in a different patient. That is why it is critical for you to understand what sets it off in you so that you can avoid them.

Often, medications for this disorder have to be taken well in advance of the episodes, at times when you are cool or normal. If you neglect to take them, perhaps out of forgetfulness or neglect, or fear of the side effects, you might find yourself slipping into the manic-depressive episodes more often than not. One could argue that you triggered it yourself.

An elevated mood or mania in a sufferer of this disorder can be triggered off when the person has just been through a rough ordeal and comes out on top. If such experiences persist, you may sometimes begin to feel like you can achieve anything and no one can stop you. It is a shame, but you are going to have to lookout for the nice sides of life too.

Bipolar Disorder – Will Your Loved One Kill Themselves?

Almost 20% of people with bipolar disorder will kill themselves and nearly half of all individuals with the disorder will attempt suicide at least once. I’m not trying to scare you with those numbers – I just want you to realize that there is a very good chance that at some point in your loved one’s life, they may attempt suicide. You must take the threat of suicide very seriously when you’re dealing with bipolar disorder.

Suicide attempts generally take place during bipolar depressive episodes; however, most suicide attempts do not take place during the deepest part of the depression. The majority of them actually take place when the depressive episode is beginning to lift. No one knows for certain why this is, but two possibilities are that when the person comes to grips with the decision to take their own life that the gloom lifts, or that only during the beginning of recovery from depression does the person have the energy to actually go through with a suicide plan.

Either way, you need to be aware of what signs may signal that your loved one has been having suicidal thoughts. A checklist of these signs is listed below:

• Beginning to discuss suicide openly
• Talking about meeting up with dead relatives in the very near future
• Giving away items that are personal or special to them
• Purchasing knives, guns, or other weapons
• Stockpiling their medications
• Writing a will, checking on the status of life insurance policies, or finalizing funeral arrangements
• Contacting people they haven’t spoken to in a long time
• Making statements such as "You’d all be better off if I were dead" or "I don’t have anything to live for"
• Having several accidents in a row that result in injury (these may have been suicide attempts)

Make sure that you know to contact your loved one’s doctor, psychiatrist, and/or therapist immediately if they begin to show any of these signs. If you wait, it may be too late.

Your loved one may have to have to rely on your vigilance to protect them from themselves while they are in a depressive episode. There are some things you can do at the first signs of a bipolar depressive episode to protect them in case they begin to have these types of thoughts, though, such as the following:

• Hide all medications and weapons (including kitchen knives) where your loved one cannot easily access them
• Get rid of any medications that are no longer needed
• Get rid of all guns and firearms in your home
• Make arrangements to have someone be with your loved one most or all of the time
• Keep the phone number for the suicide hotline (1-800-442-HOPE) where you and/or your loved one can find it: on your refrigerator, in your speed dial, etc.

During a bipolar depressive episode, will your loved one kill themselves? Nobody knows for sure, but by taking these measures, hopefully you can help prevent them from making a fatal mistake while they are in that episode.

One of the most important things to me (and it still is) was to educate people about bipolar disorder. So I put up the bipolar news on the website as one of the ways to do that…

The Truth About Abuse And Bipolar Disorder

How To Recognize Someone With Bipolar Disorder

Early diagnosis for a person with bipolar disorder is very important.

Loving Someone With a Bipolar Disorder Can Be Tough Yet Rewarding

Often you will be ignored, mistreated, and spoken to with disrespect making even more difficult to love them. It is never easy to lend a hand to those who think grandiosely of themselves. However, we must remember that it is not there fault the bipolar disorder is dictating their behavior. Imagine yourself having to deal with disorganized thoughts and feelings.

In order to be able to look past the actions of the person with bipolar disorder, you must gain an in-depth understanding of the illness. After all if you do not understand what is happening to your loved one, then how will you be able to relate to them?

Once you feel that you have a firm grasp on what bipolar disorder is all about and how it is affecting your loved one, it is time to devise a plan to help you and your loved one cope with the mood swings.

To start understanding bipolar disorder, you should first learn to recognize the symptoms. Here are a few suggestions loving someone with bipolar disorder.

1. Remember,

It is not your loved ones fault that he/she has bipolar disorder, and that as a result he/she is not always in control of his/her feelings.

2. Understand that there are many symptoms of bipolar disorder.

For example; does he/she have sleeping problems? Why is he/she getting too much or too little sleep?

3. Observe mood changes and patterns, his/her actions and the way he/she relates to people.

Make note of your observations as to when and where it occurred so you have something to present when discussing the problem.

4. If you recognize that your loved one is acting irrationally do not do anything to embarrass them.

To love someone with bipolar disorder it is important that you not look at it as something to be ashamed of. People with bipolar disorder often are already embarrassed and ashamed, and any indication from you that you feel the same way will only make things worse. If you will feel ashamed of your loved one because he/she has bipolar disorder, you are not helping to restore his/her good health.

5. Build trust.

Trust is essential to individuals with bipolar disorder. They need you to trust them, not entrust them to other people or institutions such as the psychiatrists or an asylum. There will be times that you will feel that you cannot deal with your loved one anymore that you will be tempted to call the doctor for him to be fetched because you do not want to take care of them. Never let them hear you say those words because it will just aggravate the situation. To build up trust, an open and honest communication is needed.

6. Keep the communication line open.

Once you acknowledged the symptoms, and then ask yourself what you can do. However thinking of good ways to help your loved ones is not always the best way. You may think it is good but it may not really be helpful to the patient. Hence, it is needed that you communicate with the patient. An open and honest communication is vital. Encourage your loved one to talk about what he thinks and feels. Let him suggest ways on how you are supposed to relate to him.

7. Do not suppress your feelings.

People with bipolar disorder have a hard enough time dealing with their own emotions; they do not need to be saddled with yours as well. However, you should not suppress your own feelings because this will also create stress and tension between you and your loved one. There are many positive ways to let your loved know how you feel. You should avoid nagging, preaching, or lecturing them. Such negative actions will drive them to detach from you. If you are concerned about them, let them see that you are in fact concerned by being supportive and encouraging.

8. Let him do his way.

Along with trust and communication, let your loved one do things for themselves. Do not try and solve all their problems for them. Instead, let them solve the problems they can handle and be there when they need help.

9. Be there.

Even though you are not doing everything for your loved one, you should always be supportive and ready to help when needed.

Most importantly, apart from assistance, you need to offer your love, understanding and support.

History of Bipolar Disorder – Bipolar Disorder Already Existed …

Bipolar Disorder has been discovered many years ago however, a lot of people find it hard to understand the condition and was not accepted as an illness right away. The history of Bipolar Disorder can be traced back as far as the second century when Aretaeus from the ancient city of Turkey called Cappadocia determined some of the symptoms of mania and depression. He thought that both mania and depression warning signs were interrelated. The world of medicine didn’t recognize his findings back then since no one was able to support his theory.

The next study that followed the second century findings wasn’t around for many centuries. It was only made public in 1650 when Richard Burton, a scientist, wrote and published a book called "The Anatomy of Melancholia." He was the first one to successfully study the condition of depression and his book is still widely used today in the mental health field as a key reference. Because of this, he was named the father of depression as a mental illness.

In 1854, Jules Falret instigated the term "folie circulaire" which means circular insanity because he discovered the difference between the depression moments and heightened moods of an individual. He even supported that depression and suicide are both linked together. His findings of depression and manic episodes led to the term Bipolar Disorder but in 1875, his findings were officially called Manic-Depressive Psychosis and it has been recognized as a psychiatric disorder that is different from simple depression alone. Falret even proved that the disease has a genetic linkage as he observed that it is present within certain families.

Francois Baillarger has made an important role in the history of Bipolar Disorder as he differentiated bipolar disorder from schizophrenia for their characteristics of depressive phase. His findings allowed the Bipolar Disorder to be classified apart from the other known mental disorders during the era.

Emil Krapelin in 1913 coined the term manic-depressive as he studied the effects of depression and manic episodes. His unique approach to the mental illness was fully accepted during his time and became the most widely accepted theory of the early 1930’s.

In 1948, Dr. John Cade, a Psychiatrist of Bundoora Repatriation Hospital in Melbourne, Australia, was able to discover the positive effects of Lithium Carbonate in treating some of the World War II veterans who have been experiencing manic-depressive psychosis. This was the first time a drug has been discovered to have some successful effect in treating a psychiatric condition. Until now, the compound of Lithium Carbonate is being widely used as a medication for the Bipolar Disorder.

The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disorder published an article in 1952 about the genetic linkage of manic-depressive. It has revealed the possibility of manic-depressive to run in the family stricken with the mental illness. In the 1960’s, anyone who has been showing the symptoms of the disease were institutionalized but were given little help by the government since they refused to accept manic-depression as a mental illness. The early 1970’s made the mark for new laws that established to help those who were afflicted with the manic-depressive illness. The year 1979 was the year of birth of the National Association of Mental Health or NAMI.

The term Bipolar Disorder replaced the known manic-depressive disorder in 1980 when the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association used it as a diagnostic term. Throughout the 1980’s, studies have been conducted to tell the difference between adult and childhood bipolar disorders. To this day, the history of Bipolar Disorder continues to prosper as more and more studies are being conducted to know the probable causes as well as newer methods to treat the mental illness.

Medication and counseling is very important elements in the successful treatment of bipolar disease. People are all different. Not everyone will be able to take the same medications…

During the late 1950’s was when the term “manic depressive” first came about, although it is now commonly referred as Bipolar Disorder, which is the name for it now…

Bipolar Disorder – Self Hypnosis to Help Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder help is available in various treatments. The first step is to recognize the symptoms of manic depression to determine if you need to seek help. Borderline personality disorder and depression are often confused with this mental illness.

The problem with getting bipolar disorder help is that you may not know that you have the condition. You may think that you fall into bouts of depression when you actually have this mental illness. The difficulty is identifying the manic episodes.

Manic Episodes

Mania is a condition that many people with this condition do not recognize because it is not bothersome, at least on the surface. Manic states are often euphoric, consisting of "highs" that make you feel energetic and motivated. Many people feel very productive and happy during this stage.

Manic episodes can be damaging if you consider some of the behaviors associated with them. You may spend money in great excess. Shopping binges occur because you feel free and at ease. They also occur because you are thinking about the consequences of your actions.

You may also feel agitated during this part of the cycle. You become irritable and angry with relative ease. The manic stage of the mental illness does not last long and it is followed by deep feelings of depression and despair. This cycle of the condition is very problematic.

Depressive Episodes

You may seek bipolar disorder help because of your depressive states. The problem is that you may only recognize the depression without addressing the mania. This can lead you to believe that you should receive treatment for a depressive mood condition.

Depressed states are mentally and physically unbearable. It may be difficult for you to get out of bed. You don’t look forward to any events and things that you used to love no longer bring any joy. Prolonged sadness wears on you and you feel an overwhelming sense of hopelessness.

Bipolar Disorder Help

You can get the support you need through self-hypnosis in conjunction with your psychiatrist’s intervention plan. Hypnosis is very effective as a complementary approach to dealing with manic depression and the episodes that go along with them. This approach works through the subconscious mind.

Self-hypnosis goes directly to the subconscious and instills new perceptions and thinking processes. Your mind is open to suggestion and you are able to work through your stages and recognize the cycle for what it really is.

You are better able to control your thoughts and actions in a calm, collected manner when using this approach. Your responses are automatic in the subconscious and this force can help shape your conscious thoughts and behaviors. Bipolar disorder help is at its best when it is augmented with self-hypnosis.

Bipolar Disorder Advancements

Bipolar disorder is a mental illness requiring prolonged treatment. People with this disorder experience extreme emotional highs (mania) and lows (depression.) Numerous advancements in bipolar disorder treatments have been made over the past few decades.

Physicians, however, still do not know exactly what causes the illness. The disorder is now effectively treated through a combination of medication and psychotherapy. Since it is a recurrent illness, lifelong preventive treatment is strongly recommended.

Bipolar disorder medications include mood stabilizers, antidepressants, and antipsychotics. Mood stabilizers can effectively control manic and depressive moods in many patients. Lithium carbonate, Valproic acid, Lamotrigine, Carbamazepine, Oxcarbazepine, and Topiramate are the commonly used mood stabilizers. The majority of mood stabilizers are anticonvulsants, with the exclusion of lithium. Mood stabilizers are sometimes used in combination with one another.

Bipolar disorder is also treated with antidepressant medications. However, they carry a high risk of inducing mania, particularly in patients who are not taking a mood stabilizer. Common antidepressants are monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), tricyclics such as imipramine (Tofranil), and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as fluoxetine (Prozac.) Antipsychotic drugs are used in severe cases where mania and depression are strong enough to cause psychosis. The most commonly used antipsychotic drugs are risperidone, quetiapine, and olanzapine. Some of them have mood-stabilizing properties.

Psychotherapy, together with drug treatment, provides many additional benefits. It helps patients resolve their work and relationship problems. The most common psychotherapy interventions attempted are cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, and family-focused therapy.

Proper nutrition also helps control the mood swings associated with bipolar disorder. Research indicates that high doses of nutritional supplements such as glyconutrients cure symptoms of manic depression. Alternative treatments such as acupuncture and orthomolecular therapy are also used in the treatment of bipolar disorder.

Effects of Depression on Men

More than 6 million men are affected by depression each year in the U.S. There are about twice as many women as men diagnosed with the illness, which leads to the false stereotype that men do not get depressed. It is unknown in the medical community whether depression occurs less often in men, or whether it is just diagnosed less frequently. With help from a mental health professional, the effects of the illness can eventually go away. The disease effects people differently, so symptoms and improvement may show themselves.

Types

There are three types of depression that affect men. The most common is major depressive disorder. There may be only one episode of it, or it may be recurring throughout his lifetime. Dysthymia is less common and not as severe as major depression, but is chronic and episodes are longer in duration. Dysthymic men may also have bouts of major depressive disorder at other times in their lives. Bipolar disorder features extreme highs and lows in mood.

Signs

Common symptoms include feelings of extreme sadness, worthlessness and guilt. There is a lack of interest to participate in things that used to be fun or enjoyable, such as hobbies. There is a noticeable change in eating and sleeping habits. Sufferers of depressive disorder may also experience restlessness and become annoyed easily.

Physical symptoms include frequent headaches, problems with digestion and chronic pain. A depression awareness study by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) found that men could describe these symptoms without being aware they were depressed. Many of these men were hesitant to seek help from a mental health professional. Reason cited were fear of loss of respect from friends and family and negative repercussions from their employer of anyone knew.

Some physical illnesses can have similar symptoms and effects on men as depression, so a visit to the doctor is important for improvement and recovery. Low testosterone levels, viral infections and thyroid conditions are some of the physical ailments that mimic or mask depressive disorder.

Recovery Tips

Treatment includes psychotherapy and medication. The disease affects people differently, so there is no one tried and true way to overcome the symptoms. It takes time for the symptoms to fade, so those suffering from the illness should not expect it to disappear overnight. The first ordinary signs that depression is lifting are a change in both diet and sleeping habits. The better the patient feels, the more active he will be.

Meanwhile, those suffering from the illness should deliberately try to engage in some activities, such as mild exercise, attending a social dinner, movie or spectator sports. For men with religious beliefs, attending a church service or social event may be therapeutic. Engaging in activities that make him feel better helps.
