Loving Someone With a Bipolar Disorder Can Be Tough Yet Rewarding

Often you will be ignored, mistreated, and spoken to with disrespect making even more difficult to love them. It is never easy to lend a hand to those who think grandiosely of themselves. However, we must remember that it is not there fault the bipolar disorder is dictating their behavior. Imagine yourself having to deal with disorganized thoughts and feelings.

In order to be able to look past the actions of the person with bipolar disorder, you must gain an in-depth understanding of the illness. After all if you do not understand what is happening to your loved one, then how will you be able to relate to them?

Once you feel that you have a firm grasp on what bipolar disorder is all about and how it is affecting your loved one, it is time to devise a plan to help you and your loved one cope with the mood swings.

To start understanding bipolar disorder, you should first learn to recognize the symptoms. Here are a few suggestions loving someone with bipolar disorder.

1. Remember,

It is not your loved ones fault that he/she has bipolar disorder, and that as a result he/she is not always in control of his/her feelings.

2. Understand that there are many Symptoms of bipolar disorder.

For example; does he/she have sleeping problems? Why is he/she getting too much or too little sleep?

3. Observe mood changes and patterns, his/her actions and the way he/she relates to people.

Make note of your observations as to when and where it occurred so you have something to present when discussing the problem.

4. If you recognize that your loved one is acting irrationally do not do anything to embarrass them.

To love someone with bipolar disorder it is important that you not look at it as something to be ashamed of. People with bipolar disorder often are already embarrassed and ashamed, and any indication from you that you feel the same way will only make things worse. If you will feel ashamed of your loved one because he/she has bipolar disorder, you are not helping to restore his/her good health.

5. Build trust.

Trust is essential to individuals with bipolar disorder. They need you to trust them, not entrust them to other people or institutions such as the psychiatrists or an asylum. There will be times that you will feel that you cannot deal with your loved one anymore that you will be tempted to call the doctor for him to be fetched because you do not want to take care of them. Never let them hear you say those words because it will just aggravate the situation. To build up trust, an open and honest communication is needed.

6. Keep the communication line open.

Once you acknowledged the symptoms, and then ask yourself what you can do. However thinking of good ways to help your loved ones is not always the best way. You may think it is good but it may not really be helpful to the patient. Hence, it is needed that you communicate with the patient. An open and honest communication is vital. Encourage your loved one to talk about what he thinks and feels. Let him suggest ways on how you are supposed to relate to him.

7. Do not suppress your feelings.

People with bipolar disorder have a hard enough time dealing with their own emotions; they do not need to be saddled with yours as well. However, you should not suppress your own feelings because this will also create stress and tension between you and your loved one. There are many positive ways to let your loved know how you feel. You should avoid nagging, preaching, or lecturing them. Such negative actions will drive them to detach from you. If you are concerned about them, let them see that you are in fact concerned by being supportive and encouraging.

8. Let him do his way.

Along with trust and communication, let your loved one do things for themselves. Do not try and solve all their problems for them. Instead, let them solve the problems they can handle and be there when they need help.

9. Be there.

Even though you are not doing everything for your loved one, you should always be supportive and ready to help when needed.

Most importantly, apart from assistance, you need to offer your love, understanding and support.
